We’ve rounded up some of the best chemical and mineral SPFs to shield your skin all year round.
So what do chemical and mineral even mean?
Chemical vs Mineral
You may have noticed that sunscreens are often categorised into two groups: chemical and mineral. In essence, chemical sunscreens use chemical UV filters to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. Chemical sunscreens are quick, easy to apply and have an invisible finish making them the perfect choice for all skin tones.
Mineral sunscreens use ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to physically block UV radiation from the sun. Sitting on top of your skin rather than penetrating it, mineral sunscreens are a great option for even the most sensitive of skin. Mineral sunscreens are usually thicker in consistency and tend to leave a white cast on deeper skin tones.
The Best Chemical SPFs

]]>But what happens when your skin barrier is damaged? The skin becomes more prone to water-loss meaning that it is no longer able to hold on to that much-needed hydration that keeps our skin looking youthful. A damaged skin barrier also makes it much tougher for your skin to repair the signs of ageing and post-breakout marks.
How does the skin barrier become damaged?
The skin barrier can be weakened by several factors, including too much sun exposure and the use of harsh cleansers and scrubs which can leave the skin feeling very tight: a sign the skin has been stripped of its natural oils. Overusing active ingredients like exfoliants, retinoids and anti-acne treatments can also weaken the skin’s barrier over time.
What can I do to protect my skin barrier?
Damaged skin barrier? You’ve come to the right place! The easiest way to protect (and heal!) your skin’s barrier is to go back to basics. Remove the actives and start with a basic routine made up of a gentle cleanser, a soothing moisturiser and sun protection. To keep your skin barrier well protected, look for nourishing ingredients like ceramides, cholesterol, hyaluronic acid and plant oils to soothe, smooth and repair the skin’s barrier.
The Best Products to Protect Your Skin Barrier:

]]>Enter tubing mascaras – the lazy girl’s answer to fabulous, fluttery lashes and an easy removal process that is kind to the skin.
Tubing mascaras originate from Japan and differ from usual mascaras in that they cleverly coat your lashes in ‘tubes’ of waterproof polymers, instead of covering your lashes in pigment like a normal mascara. They are also smudge-proof, dry quickly and don’t clump. YAS. How to remove? Simply wash your face with luke-warm water, then use your fingers to gently slide off the tubes of mascara - no need for cotton pads or makeup remover, making it an ecological win.
We’ve rounded up the best we want you to know about:
Perfect for a natural look, the Glossier Lash Slick conditions, lengthens and nourishes lashes and is suitable for sensitive eyes. Bonus? It’s dermatologist tested and ophthalmologist-tested, and a steal at £14.
The Curling Mascara by Kevyn Aucoin is an easy everyday favourite of ours. With gorgeous slimline packaging it’s easy to pop in your handbag for touch-ups on-the-go, plus the sizeable brush is great for curling, volume and length.
M.A.C fans rejoice: the Extended Play Lash Mascara is certainly add-to-makeup-bag worthy – it lasts up to 16 hours and uses impressive Thermal Sensitive Technology to ensure it is smudge, sweat and humidity proof. Ideal for gym bunnies or you know, just sat WFH and eating snacks.
The L’Oreal Double Extension Beauty Tube Mascara features two brushes – one is a white nourishing primer to condition and lengthen lashes first, and then use the black tubing brush on top, giving you healthy, shiny lashes and a serious falsie look.

]]>So what can we expect from a beauty range by Zara? A collection that gives you a cool girl high-end aesthetic at high street prices.
A vision of bright colours, classic neutrals and stylish modern packaging, this collection promises to deliver everything you need, to create an editorial inspired look.
Zara teamed up with legendary British make-up artist Diane Kendal, who has worked on everything from Vogue covers to Tom Ford catwalk shows.
"When Zara approached me to lead the creative direction of Zara Beauty, I saw an opportunity to make something that everyone would want to use," says Kendal. "Zara has always reached such a diverse audience, and I wanted to bring that same big vision to beauty with a collection that is clean, refillable, and accessible to all."
With 130 different shades of classic Zara naturals to eccentric stand out brights, this collection promises something for everyone. For colour this collection is king, but we're looking forward to shade extensions in the complexion ranges, which we hope we will see in future launches.
Sadly, the bronzers and face palettes aren't as inclusive and expansive as we would hope (and expect).
Our hero product from the range, is a mask-proof matte lipstick, which in the current climate is a real godsend. Ultimatte in Original is the perfect dupe for the original Ruby Woo formula and colour - and a steal at £11.99.

Sex on the Beach – Too Faced Sweet Peach Eye Palette
A classic first girls’ holiday cocktail that will forever hold a place in many of our hearts is of course, a Sex on the Beach - steering us towards another oldie but goldie, the Too Faced Sweet Peach Eye Shadow Palette. It holds plenty of peach shades which are much easier to wear than you might think, but there are also plenty of neutrals to ease yourself in with. And the peach scent is definitely nicer than Schnapps.
Espresso Martini – Frank Lip Scrub
Summertime is the perfect opportunity to make sure you’re exfoliated and hydrated all over - including your lips. So, while we’re sure you’re excited to get your hands on some new fun lip products, a tried and tested scrub is probably a better place to start. And if you like Espresso Martinis, you’re in luck. Frank Body’s Lip Scrub is particularly great because not only is it a pro at removing any dryness, it contains actual coffee seed grinds and raw sugar so it tastes pretty good too.
Mojito – Mint Melt Cooling Face Primer
As temperatures rise it’s important you’ve got some products you can count on to ensure your makeup stays in place and if it has cooling effects then it’s a win win. Cue E.l.f’s Mint Melt Cooling Face Primer, which if you like Mojitos, is the product for you. This multitasking primer comes in a gel texture with hyaluronic acid, to keep you feeling hydrated. And we love the added mint scent too.
Passion Fruit Martini – Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre In Ibiza Nights
A Passion Fruit Martini always has us hankering after evenings on holiday, so what better product to feature than Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Lustre In Ibiza Nights. It’s pretty sheer, so will pair well with a variety of different lip shades and despite being non-stick is actually quite long-lasting.

]]>Mica is commonly mined in India and Madagascar, where extreme poverty drives children as young as five to scavenge for mica, due to being small enough to crawl deep into the mines to cut out the mica by hand. This is incredibly dangerous and causes an array of health problems, including open sores, infections, breathing issues due to mica dust and lack of oxygen in the mines.
Sadly it’s not so simple for companies to pull out of mica mining completely, as to do so would leave families without a source of income. Companies such as L’Oreal, who own NYX, Maybelline, Urban Decay and more – continue to source mica in a traceable and transparent manner, bought from suppliers who source from independently verified, gated mines where only adults mine the mica.
On the other side of the coin, companies such as Lush Cosmetics decided to completely remove all mica from their products in 2018 and only use synthetic mica; a biodegradable ingredient created in a lab, which is purer and brighter than natural mica.
There is no transparency available yet to determine whether the mica used in your product was mined from a child or an adult, but one thing for certain is that child labour must come to an end. If you want to avoid mica in your cosmetics and skincare, the best thing to do is to check your labels and recognise whether the mica used is natural or synthetic. Natural mica is listed as ‘Mica’, ‘Potassium Aluminium Silicate’ or ‘CI 77019’, and synthetic mica will be listed as ‘Synthetic Mica’ or ‘Synthetic Fluorphlogopite’.
There has also been the creation of the Responsible Mica Initiative, or RMI, a group that was started in 2017 with the aim of establishing an ethical transparent supply of mica by 2022. Companies that have joined include Chanel, Coty, Shiseido, L’Oreal and Estée Lauder.
You can read more about the RMI here.

Crowned 'Afro Hairdresser of the Year' not once, not twice, but three times at the British Hairdressing Awards, plus being a member of the British Beauty Council, there isn’t much Charlotte Mensah doesn’t know about afro and curly hair. Her Manketti Hair Oil uses the Manketti nut, used for centuries for its nutritive and emollient properties and a luxurious combination of other oils – lemon, orange , clove, patchouli and more. Consider your curls conditioned, nourished, moisturised and shiny, all in one. Just run a small amount through dry or wet hair, brush through and style.
Remember Meghan Markle’s stellar (sorry) Stella McCartney halter dress and her relaxed twisted bun on her wedding evening? George Northwood was the man behind it – and he’s now dropped a range for us mere mortals exclusively at Boots, titled ‘Undone’. Choose from Undamaged, Unparched and Unpolluted, or our fave – Undirty, for your everyday cleanse - giving hair strength, shine, humidity and anti-frizz, with Northwood calling it ‘the one stop shop to great hair.’ Yes please. See the matching conditioner here.
The brains behind OUAI (pronounced way) is the entrepreneur Jen Atkin – hairdresser to the Jenners, Hadids and J.Lo to name a few. OUAI gives your locks that ‘French girl chic’ and better yet, is an affordable, yet luxurious and Instagrammable range. Our favourite? The Curl Crème, which is jam packed full of conditioning oils like chia, linseed and coconut, to tame, smooth and de-frizz everything from slight waves to tight coils. We love the delicate scent of lemon and bergamot although there is an un-fragranced option here and that it’s vegan and 100% recyclable. Coming to all shelfies near you soon.
When a hair stylist has five decades of experience in the fashion industry, you sit up and listen. Sam McKnight’s Cool Girl Mist is your go-to texturising spray for that effortless and tousled look that everyone wants. It can be layered with other products without getting crunchy or stiff, comes in a handy travel size and is scented with a botanical fragrance. Tip your head upside down and spray throughout the hair for immediate sophistication.
Hands up if you’re guilty of doing a DIY colour job during lockdown? The colourist Josh Wood (whose customers include Kylie Minogue and Elle Macpherson) has created a range of conditioning colour treatments called ‘Gloss’, which you can use to easily switch up your colour. Specifically designed to be used in between hair appointments or to play with at home, Gloss lasts for 6 washes, and nourishes, conditions and refreshes the hair. We’re in love with the vibrant Berry Brunette.

You will be pleased to know that the newest super skincare ingredient resveratrol is found in red wine, namely in the skin of grapes.
So what is it? Applied topically, resveratrol is an antioxidant with a heap of skincare benefits: it protects the skin, slows aging, calms redness, brightens and improves the overall appearance of your complexion. (Disclaimer: you’d have to drink hundreds of bottles of Pinot noir to reap the benefits of resveratrol).
A relative newbie on the market, resveratrol is mainly found in moisturisers and eye creams. So how does it differ to the much loved, much respected retinol? Resveratrol is known to protect the skin from free radicals and helps interrupt and rebuff environmental stressors, whilst retinol helps with already present skincare issues; enlarged pores, uneven skin texture and fine lines.
Resveratrol is best applied as part of your evening skincare routine, as antioxidants like resveratrol, work best when your skin is repairing itself at night (also helping to boost antioxidant production inside your skin cells.)
Our top 4 resveratrol products:
We love The Ordinary for its affordability, no-nonsense packaging and for giving us products that actually work – and the Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% is no different. With a whopping 3% of these two potent ingredients (most skincare products tend to incorporate 1% or less of resveratrol, and 0.5% or less of ferulic acid) this is one serum we need. Apply 2 to 3 drops every other day to start seeing results.
Caudalie deemed resveratrol as ‘a treasure of youth’, and launched a resveratrol collection, focusing on lifting, firming and nourishing the skin. The Resveratrol Lift Firming Eye Gel Cream packs a punch with its formulation of resveratrol, hyaluronic acid and vegan collagen to help smooth out the eye area and reduce puffiness. Top tip? Apply it to your lip contours too.
Check out the rest of the Caudalie resveratrol range here.
The Inika Phytofuse Renew Resveratrol Eye Cream is formulated with a triple whammy of resveratrol, squalene and grapeseed oil – all excellent at hydrating and nourishing the delicate under eye area. It also contains the beautiful rose of Jericho, which aids in improving skin density and moisture.
Finally, the SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E Treatment contains 1% pure resveratrol and pure vitamin E which gives the skin a high dose of anti-ageing benefits, including reducing the effects of environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays. It’s also formulated for all skin types, so no need to fear if you have sensitive skin.

]]>Which makeup product would be your desert island saviour? Ask most of us here at Slapp and it’s usually a concealer.
It’s hardly surprising, given that concealer has the ability to swoop in and sort out every skin concern.
Whether you need it to cover or brighten, concealer is the holy grail of skin-correctors - and there’s an abundance of options available. From brightening to colour-correcting, industrial strength to light coverage, there’s a solution for every skin concern.
And just when we thought we couldn’t hype up our heroine any more, a viral TikTok tutorial proved that trusty Concealer has another amazing hack – face lifting powers.
The Tutorial
Megha Singh has been trending across TikTok after demonstrating how to give yourself an instant ‘face lift’ using concealer.
@meghaess Facelift anyone? #facelift #concealerhack #makeuphack #makeuptricks #makeuproutine #itsaremix #gotthisforyou #makeuptutorial #skincareroutine #foryou
♬ BDASH Breathe - BDash
Megha uses a brightening concealer to highlight the natural contours of her face – around her eye, the outer corner of her mouth and the side of her nose - to reverse contour; and sweeps the concealer in an upwards direction towards the high points of her face to accentuate the lifting effect.
To achieve this quick face-lift, all you need is a concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone to create a contrasting shadow. With Summer approaching, many of us will be switching from fuller coverage foundations to quick touch-ups - and a cleverly placed concealer might be all that’s needed to achieve that fresh and snatched look.
Here are some of our our top concealers to help you instantly lift and brighten your complexion:
This medium-to-full coverage concealer is designed to brighten, highlight and act as a spot treatment. This gorgeous Clean concealer leaves skin radiant thanks to natural botanicals, hyaluronic acid and peptides which help moisturise and build collagen. Kosas recently expanded the shade range for this skincare-infused cutie, so it’s hardly a surprise this is always trending in the Slapp app.
Estee Lauder Instant Fix Double Wear Concealer
This waterproof, creaseless and multi-tasking two-sided concealer instantly lifts and brightens. The Hydra Prep serum hydrates the skin and smoothes under-eye dryness, while the concealer side gives 24-hour medium-to-full coverage with a unique stretch formula. We love the concealer alone, but used atop of the priming serum it is quite outstanding- hydrating, brightening and long-lasting. It’s a dream to use.
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer
This magic wand of a concealer is a must for flawless looking skin. Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Away contains Persian Silk Tree Bark and Wild Indigo extracts to diminish dark circles, minimise crow’s feet and increase skin’s luminosity. The precise cushion applicator is designed to glide over blemishes, and grasp the under-eye contour for a smooth and full coverage finish. It’s perfect for touch-ups on the go and at home.

]]>As there’s nothing too intense on the horizon, you can easily introduce yourself back to the makeup bag that has barely been touched for the past 12 months.
Expect faux freckles, barely-there skin and tons of blush, to define the perfect spring look for 2021.
Freckles @christinanadin
In a quest to make base makeup look as natural as ever, faux freckles are arguably the biggest beauty trend of the moment. Even if you are already blessed with freckles your foundation or tinted moisturizer may cover them up which is a big giveaway that you’ve got some makeup on. By using a freckle pen or just your eyebrow pencil you can subtly add some faux freckles for a youthful and sunkissed look.
Curtain bangs @matildadjerf
French girl hair, we find, is most easily achieved with the effortless and shaggy, curtain bangs. Without the scary commitment of a full-on fringe, curtain bangs are a great way to shape your face and nod to the ‘70s icon, Jane Birkin. You can go as long or short with them as you want to make them your own and remember they look just as great with hair down as they do when paired with a bun or pony.
Tons of blush @lirislaw
Thanks to TikTok and a Vogue tutorial by a certain Miss Beer, blush is officially back. Taking a backseat in recent years, it seems blush is finally becoming recognized as the ultimate go-to for a sunkissed glow. Sorry, bronzer. The trend this year is to put it basically everywhere, not just your cheeks. We’re talking lips, temples and your eyelids for a look that is both chicly monochromatic with a touch of sunburn.
Barely there skin @amy_sall
Following off from the faux freckles we mentioned earlier, ditching your full coverage foundation and opting for something a little lighter this Spring/Summer is the way forward. If this feels a little scary to you, remember you can always use a more industrial strength concealer on your problem areas. This way you’ll still have a coverage that makes you feel comfortable but overall a more natural finish.
Floating liner @jamilla.strand
When it comes to liner this season, we’re taking it up a notch, literally. Instead of placing your eyeliner right next to the lashline, try putting it closer to your crease instead. It feels totally retro and is a great way to make your eyes feel a little more interesting - especially when you’re wearing a mask.
You can just stick with the classic black but to make it feel more summer appropriate we’d go for an injection of colour.

Lightweight foundations are often associated with dewy and glowing skin but that doesn’t have to be the default. For those of us who prefer a more matte finish, this Ordinary Serum Foundation is worth browsing. The lightweight foundation provides a natural-looking medium-coverage and semi-matte finish. This foundation is available in 21 shades.

Here are the best beauty products you should buy right now based on your star sign.
Aries, you’re always ahead of the game. So, what better product for you to invest in right now then the foundation that literally everyone is talking about. Just in case you haven’t heard, the whole of the Internet (thanks to TikTok, of course) is raving about KVD’s Good Apple Skin Foundation. If you’re into an ultra-full coverage with a lightweight feel, look no further.
Taurus, you’re known for being practical and reliable and we suspect you want nothing less from your beauty products. Introducing Glossier Cloud Paint: a buildable gel-cream blush that you can use on your eyes, cheeks and lips. It’s sheer enough in pigment for it to be easy to work with and hard to go overboard leaving cheeks dewy, never streaky.
Gemini – Nars Euphoria Palette
Geminis, you aren’t the best decision makers, which makes a palette your best bet for any upcoming beauty splurge. Luckily, Nars has just released its Euphoria Palette which has a range of both eyeshadows and highlighters so you won’t be left with any post-payday regret.
Cancer – Estee Lauder Engraved Pure Colour Envy Lipstick
Cancer, you’re all about anything sentimental. So, this payday why not make your beauty purchase feel that little more special? Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Envy lipsticks can be engraved for just an extra £5. Or, if that’s not your thing, you can also do this to their perfumes and world-famous Advance Night Repair serum too.
Leo, you love being the centre of attention and what better way to do so than with a truly standout highlighter. The Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters have been on our radar for quite some time now but if you’ve not yet added to basket, this is your sign.
Virgo – Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Liner (
Virgo, you never miss the fine details. Why not master a new graphic liner trend just before lockdown is up? To get your flicks perfectly symmetrical you’re going to want to opt for an eyeliner with a felt tip pen. Cue the Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Liner where you’re guaranteed to achieve perfect precision with a waterproof formula and long-lasting wear.
Libra – Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

Sagittarius – Glossier Invisible Shield
Sagittarius, you love to travel, which right now is probably just consisting of long walks around your hometown. But, as the summer months approach, you’re bound to be spending plenty of time outdoors. It may seem a little boring but your product is a good SPF. You’ll thank us one day.
Capricorn – Gucci Stylo Contour Des Yeux Kohl
Capricorn, you love tradition and sticking to what you know. Our guess is you’ve probably been repurchasing the same beauty products over and over since you were 16, now it’s time to try something new. Gucci have just released a new collection of kohl pencils which look dreamy but, instead of opting for a black or brown, try one of their four jewel tones for something a little more experimental.
Aquarius – Bare Minerals Gen Nude Blonzer
Aquarius, your strengths lie in your progressiveness and independence so it’s only right to invest in brands that reflect these values. Bare Minerals is the pioneer of clean beauty and their latest blush bronzer hybrid is next on our to-try list. Turns out it’s a favourite of Hailey Bieber too.
Pisces – Milk Makeup Glitter Stick
Pisces, you’re said to be the most artistic of all the signs. We’ve opted for the Milk Makeup Glitter Stick for something a little more playful for your product. Don’t be put off by the name, the strength of the glitter is buildable. Start off light on the cheekbones for a holographic highlight, or apply with a heavier hand for something more intense on the eyes, or to top off a lip colour.

]]>So whether you love understated chic, a blast of bright colour or intricate nail art, we’ve got you covered with 2021’s new nail trends.
Gradient nails are going nowhere – and the colour possibilities are endless. Whether you go for pretty soft nudes or amp it up with a brighter colour palette, this is the biggest trend right now for decision-phobes.
Good news for pink fans – the colour is big this season after pink nails popped up on the Spring 2021 runways at Fendi, Christian Cowan and Tom Ford. We love this classy take on muted salmon pink.
The tortoiseshell trend is everywhere, though we’re not complaining – it’s chic, abstract and goes with everything in our wardrobe. For a fresh take on the trend, go for beautifully delicate tortoiseshell tips.
It’s impossible not to showcase floral nails for spring, especially when they do a grand job of putting a smile on your face in these stressful times. We’re in love with these negative space daisies; pretty as a petal.
Make like Picasso and draw your own abstract art. We love the clash of chocolate and Tiffany blue.
This checkerboard pattern has been everywhere of late and we’re fully on board – pun intended. Either go all out with a full design, or just decorate the tips if you’re pattern shy.
Minimalists rejoice! This oh so chic smudge of metallic copper on a nude base is perfect for a quick and pretty mani, making you Zoom ready in a few minutes.
Sparkle all year round with this beautiful glitter half border. Whether it’s catching the sunshine or the snow, you’ll be guaranteed to stand out with this design – plus it’s more simple than it looks, just grab a glitter liner in the shade of your choice and you’re good to go!
The nail shape of the year? It’s all about the coffin right now - copy Rihanna and Cardi B and choose this long and elegant shape, which leaves plenty of room for design or embellishment, but looks equally stunning in a skin-tone flattering shade of nude.
Pantone’s official 2021 trend colours include “Kale” and “Greenery”. We love this tonal earthy green, enhanced with cheerful floral detailing – perfect for Spring.

Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Bronzer
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Bronzer, is one for those makeup magpies that love shiny, gold packaging (hi there) and a highly luxurious product to boot. It comes in 4 different shades – Fair, Tan, Medium and Deep, and you get a real sense of Charlotte’s taste and glamour in this bronzer – it is decadently huge and will sit comfortably in the palm of your hand. Being Charlotte Tilbury, she didn’t stop there – she added in the wonder ingredient hyaluronic acid, to give a blurring, soft focus effect with a beautiful matte finish. We’re in love.
Prefer creams instead? We’ve got you covered with the Huda Beauty Tantour Bronzer. Sweat resistant and water resistant, this little beauty doubles as both a contour and a bronzer, perfect for on the go and for warmer temperatures. It comes in 5 shades, starting with Fair, a honey shade best for very light complexions, to Rich, a deep mahogany for very deep complexions; with Light, Medium and Tan shades in between. If you’re looking for an all over bronzed glow for face or body, then you need the D-Bronzi Antipollution Drops by Drunk Elephant in your life. Apply a couple of drops to your favourite serum, oil or moisturiser to create a beautiful glow, whilst also resting in the knowledge that you’re helping protect your skin from environmental stressors. Can we just take a moment for this packaging? ]]>Laneige Cream Skin Toner & Moisturiser
Starting with skincare, her most raved about product had to be the Laneige Cream Skin Toner Moisturiser paired with a rose quartz face roller, of course. She describes it as having a milky consistency that quickly sinks into the skin. We’d suggest using this in place of a hydrating essence or toner, if you’re dry and following up with a separate moisturiser.
Ditching anything full coverage, Madison opts for a skin tint to even out her skin tone. Expect a lightweight, freckle-showing formula that is barely detectable on the skin, so you can totally get away with acting like you’ve got no makeup on at all. The best part? It’s great for all skin tones and fragrance free.
It’s no surprise that Nars’ Creamy Concealer has made its way into Madison’s makeup bag. She uses a lighter shade under her eyes and a shade closer to her base for any blemishes. So if you’re scared of using a skin tint on its own, this is a great way to introduce a little more coverage in the areas you feel you need it most.
A main swoon moment for Madison is over the Charlotte Tilbury wands. She uses both the highlight and contour wand but is particularly smitten by the blush, claiming this as her desert island beauty product. She applies this with a fairly heavy hand and focuses it mainly on the tops of her cheekbones and the tip of her nose, for that almost sunburned look.
Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo
Doubling down on the blush, Madison goes in for round two with Fenty Beauty in the shade Ginger Binge and Moscow Mule which she describes as ‘the best blush ever’. To use this, Madison makes it look ‘as obnoxiously blushy as possible’ by putting it all over her cheeks and across the nose to set the cream blush from before.
To get that eyelash extension effect, Glossier Lash Slick is Madisons’ go-to. And since salons are still closed, a fuller lash look we can achieve from home is at the top of our beauty wish list right now. This mascara has a plastic brush that combs through your lashes so they never end up looking clumpy but still manage to give an extra fluttery finish.
Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk
An overlined lip achieved with Charlotte Tilbury’s star product, the Lip Cheat lip liner adds the finishing touch to Madison’s face. She says the shade perfectly matches her natural lip colour which means it’s easy to go a little over the cupid's bow, while still making it look realistic. Top yours off with a swipe of lip oil for a glossy but never sticky finish. For deeper and medium skin tones, we recommend the Lip Cheat in Pillow Talks Medium and Intense.

]]>Maybe it’s the pandemic, or maybe we are just demanding more from our products, but more than ever, more of us are looking to streamline the amount of products we use and we want them to work harder then they have before; ultimately saving us time, space and coins.
Here are some of our favourite multitasking beauty products of the moment.
This much loved classic, the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare started off as a normal foundation (founder Jamie Kern Lima couldn’t find a full coverage foundation that neutralised redness for sensitive skin, and so It Cosmetics was born). but has had a fabulous revamp. It now includes hyaluronic acid, aloe vera extract and vitamins E and B5 to help improve your skin in as little as two weeks, whilst minimising pores, imperfections, redness and major glow.
Farsáli caused a social media furore when they launched and we can see why! Their primer-serum fusions have names like Unicorn Essence, Liquid Glass and Rose Gold Elixir and can be used as a moisturiser, serum or primer.
Full to the brim of fabulous ingredients (the Rose Gold Elixir contains pure 24 carat gold flakes, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and rosehip seed oil) you can also mix them with foundation for a beautifully glowy base.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is completely invisible, with no scent, parabens or alcohol. Instead, it contains specially selected skincare ingredients – like blue light-neutralising red algae and hydrating meadowfoam seed - so your skin is protected and improved at the same time. With a silky smooth texture, it works as a great primer for makeup and is also sweat and water resistant.
Eye cream in a concealer? Mind officially blown. This incredible L'Oréal Paris True Match Eye Cream in a Concealer SPF20 contains hyaluronic acid to restore moisture to the delicate under eye area and includes SPF20 to help protect and give supple and smooth results. Available in ten different shades to suit a range of skin tones, we’re impressed with this brightening, hydrating hybrid.
Having developed Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat, Terry de Gunzburg is a woman you know you can trust. Her BY TERRY Hyaluronic Pressed Hydra Powder sets makeup, mattifies without looking dull and cakey, absorbs shine and blurs imperfections. How? Enter the master ingredient: hyaluronic acid. This magnificent skin superhero holds up to one thousand times its weight in water, and leaves the skin feeling plump, dewy and moisturised. This is one makeup bag staple we won’t be living without come summer.

]]>Sunscreen protects our skin against Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays which cause sunburn. However, Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays also pose a risk, as they age the skin and contribute to skin cancer. Sunscreen does not provide protection for those UVA rays and so it’s best to search for SPF that can defend your skin against both, otherwise known as ‘broad spectrum’.
The number found on SPF bottles is an indication as to how much protection your skin will have. The higher the number the greater your protection, but don’t be fooled into thinking that a higher SPF means you can spend longer in the sun! The American Academy of Dermatology advises a daily use of SPF 30 for all skin types.
For daily use, it can take a while to find the perfect sunscreen for you. You might want to consider the texture you’re looking for, if it’s water resistant and make sure it doesn’t leave a white cast. Make sure you search for a broad-spectrum SPF that protects you against both UVA and UVB rays and consider your outdoor activity.
You can find moisturisers that contain SPF if you want the best of both worlds and require less product application. The Dermalogica Prism Protect 30 moisturiser is a highly rated product which is also broad-spectrum. Additionally, this multitasking moisturiser uses antioxidant technology which helps protect skin against pollution!
Fenty Skin’s Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturiser Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen is a jam-packed formula designed with rich skin tones in mind. This vegan, oil-free and invisible moisturiser fights dark spots, discolouration and leaves zero chalkiness! Over a long period of time, this product can improve your skin in many ways, all the while protecting yourself against harmful UV rays and uses refillable packaging to minimise waste. This product literally ticks all the boxes for our skin's needs.
For a little extra coverage for no makeup, makeup days, Bareminerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Gel Cream is a staple. This is a light formula consisting of 20 shades for a sheer-to-medium coverage, which gives you hydrating benefits with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30. This award-winning tinted moisturiser for dewy and healthy-looking skin, is available to find on the Slapp App!
For a simple daily sunscreen, you can look no further than Glossier’s own water-gel formula. The Invisible Shield is a transparent formula that doesn’t leave your face feeling greasy and leaves no white cast, therefore all skin tones friendly. This vegan formula sits well underneath makeup as it instantly absorbs into the skin - what more could we ask for?
Another daily sunscreen that doesn’t break the bank is the Garnier Ambre Solaire Ultra-Light Sensitive Face Fluid 50+. This sunscreen doesn’t just have an SPF of 50+ and protect you against UVA, UVB and long UVA rays, but also contains hyaluronic acid, which helps our skin stay hydrated for 24 hours. This SPF is also perfect for people who have sensitive skin and might suffer from irritated skin.

]]>Identify your skin type
The first (and most important) step to take when finding the perfect foundation is to figure out your skin type. It is important to think about your concern and figure out a way to work with it, not against it. You should try to tailor your foundation search around your specific skin concerns — whether it’s complementing acne, or simply wanting your skin to look more luminous.
Again, foundation isn’t one-size-fits-all - the influencer you trust with your life might recommend a particular brand, but only you can decide if it’s the right fit for your unique skin. The main skin types are dry, oily, and combination - of course, on top of that, you might be dealing with issues surrounding dullness, dehydration, breakouts, and sensitivity too. Think about your particular skin issues; one foundation might work like magic to cover up redness but may be comedogenic (which can cause acne flare-ups if you're prone to breakouts).
Determine your undertones
To determine your undertones, look at the exposed areas of the body first. If your chest and shoulders tend to be on the red and pink side, it’s safe to say you have pink undertones,
or if you’re golden, peach, and yellow, you have warmer undertones. Most importantly, your face needs to match your body. Keep in mind it has nothing to do with how light or dark your complexion is. Any skin colour can have cool, warm or neutral undertones. If none of the colours associated with undertones stands out as obvious, you have neutral undertones.
Another way to find the perfect foundation with your new-found knowledge of undertones is to be strategic about which issues you want to address the most. For example, if you have redness, foundations with yellow bases can offset that. The whole process can be incredibly time-consuming and you may have to physically test out foundations if you’re struggling. Shade-matching can be intimidating, but you can experiment with different shades along your jawline and see which one disappears.
Foundation-newbies also report finding success with shade matching tools like the Slapp App. The Slapp App matches you to the foundations, concealers and powders that are right for you. Download Slapp on iOS or Android, take a selfie in natural daylight and instantly shop in your shade, across the world’s best beauty brands.
Consider your coverage needs
When choosing your foundation coverage level, ask yourself how much you want your natural skin to show through. If the answer is lots, choose a light foundation or even a good tinted moisturiser.
If the answer is not a lot, choose a medium-coverage foundation you can ‘build’ to fuller-coverage. A tip to keep in mind when it comes to foundation coverage – you can make any foundation more sheer, by mixing the formula with your favourite moisturiser and/or applying the product with a damp beauty sponge.
Application is key
It’s not just about finding the right formula—the way your foundation looks depends heavily on how you apply it. Makeup application can make all the difference, and you can make one foundation look different simply by how you apply it.
Use a brush for more coverage and product, your fingers if you want the product to seamlessly blend into your skin, and a damp beauty sponge to add moisture and sheerness.
So once you find that perfect foundation and the formula works for you, remember to apply it accordingly to make sure the final look is exactly what you want.
