Catwalk Diversity and a Dash of Blue @ Chromat NYFW SS17

We know Fashion Week in The Big Apple has always prided itself on a refined low-key beauty aesthetic, teeming with perfect-skinned models donning dewy skin and a hint of smudged eyeliner, or brushed up brows simply matched with a crisp red lip. So when one morning, having scrolled endlessly through the NYFW Instagram feeds and hashtags, staying up to speed with all the backstage beauty, we came across a snapshot of a stunning green-eyed girl with high arching brows, and two electrified blue stripes just at the base of each. We were instantly intrigued.
And so we came across one of the most inspiring brands to hit the fashion scene: Chromat. With bold electric blue framing model’s features in angled graphic shapes, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that Chromat is no ordinary fashion label. Known for their super structured body cages and harnesses, layered over sporty-style swimsuits with touches of bright neon colours, Chromat is the brand taking a solid stance in advocating diversity in fashion. This season, much like previous seasons, their SS17 runway was filled to the brim with women of all shapes, sizes and skin tones. Choreographer and dancer Mela Murder opened the show with a sultry slithering act, with striking plus-size women, trans women and heavily tattooed beauties following suit.
Becca McCharen founded the brand in 2010, having trained as an architect at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, and was one of the first to experiment with 3D printing and wearable tech. Coming from a not-so-fashion-world, it’s easy to see why McCharen is adamant about championing the everyday woman. Her super structural designs create a space in which women can embrace and express self-confidence and fearlessness, and by actively putting real women on her runways, she makes clothing accessible again - not just for the slinky tall, dainty framed and statuesque.
This is what is so absorbing about Chromat, the fact that they remind us to appreciate the female body in all its diverse shapes and skin tones, and that’s exactly the empowering message we’re all about at Slapp. Their philosophy oozes through all aspects of their label, from choice of models, to designs, and even down to their runway makeup looks, which we fell in love with instantly. Electric cobalt blue is a stunning colour that can turn your makeup routine into something out of this world. If you’re you’re die-hard for your black eyeliner and would never venture into anything else because you know it’s foolproof, just hear us out for the electric blue.
Get the Look:
The key to mastering the colour is subtlety and simplicity, and using thin, flawless lines means you’ll never look overboard or like you’ve just come back from the future. To make it super wearable, pick one facial feature to accentuate, and stick with it. For example, make like a Chromat runway muse and draw a thin line just under the inner part of your eyebrows, following its natural shape. It’s slightly unusual but it’s definitely a party-worthy look. If you’re feeling like stepping out of the box, draw a line just above the crease and following your eye’s natural curve. This brings attention to the eyes without looking too wacky and you’ll find that it is actually super wearable. If that’s all still slightly too much, line your waterline with a blue gel pencil so it lasts all day, or create your usual cat-eye flick with a blue liquid or gel liner and a precision angled brush. If you want to add only the faintest hint of blue to your routine, do a few coats of electric blue mascara instead of your usual black, which will make your eyes stand out in the subtlest way.
With so many shades of blue to choose from on the beauty market, electric is one of the most universal, because its deep rich undertones have a way of complimenting so many skin tones. If you have blue or green eyes, this colour will make them pop. If you have dark brown or hazel eyes, blue is a match made in heaven as they are opposite each other on the colour wheel. Don’t be afraid to bring out your inner fearless wild child and dive into the big deep blue this winter - a colour sure to bring a sexy twist to any night or day look.
