Her soulful melodies are the perfect soundtrack for self-empowerment and her entrancing lyrics alone, make singer songwriter Morgan Munroe one to watch.
We chatted to the rising star about getting started in the music industry, finding inspiration and the power of seeing the glass half full.
Name:
Morgan Munroe
Where are you from?
I'm from Leicester, but originally I'm English, Jamaican and Trinidadian.
What do you do?
I'm a singer/songwriter.
What is your typical day like?
That’s a hard one, my days are never the same! I'm more of an early bird than a night owl so on average it’s an early start, the main things that take up most days are gym, cooking (I love cooking and always try to make time to eat home cooked meals rather than eating out), writing songs, which I mostly do in my bedroom at home. Or I'll have a studio session in the evening.
How did you get started in the music industry?
I've been singing since I came out of the womb LOL. It's a career path I always knew I was going to take. As a kid I used to sing in any music workshops going in Leicester; I started writing and performing, then eventually I moved to London when I was 18 and the rest is history!
Which part of the creative process do you most enjoy?
My favourite part of the whole process has to be performing. I LOVE performing. One of the reasons I decided to pursue a career in music was because I had something I wanted to share with people, so getting to do that live is an amazing feeling. The audience gives me an experience just as much as I give them one, and it's different every single time.
What has been your greatest achievement in your career so far?
My Debut EP is my baby, the first of many but also the first body of work that represents who I am as an artist. After years of being swayed away from creating the type of music that’s homely to me, it was a massive sense of achievement in gaining that creative control back with 'Layers' and for people to accept it with open arms as well.
How do you stay healthy, body and mind?
I go to the gym regularly and feel great for it! I am here for home cooked food. I think I eat pretty healthily, but definitely have a balanced diet because if I want to eat, something I'll eat it. I'm not really into all that calorie counting stuff. When it comes to keeping my mind healthy, I'm generally a glass half full kind of girl.
The gym helps both my body and mind stay healthy, but I occasionally do morning affirmations in the mirror which REALLY helps me to stay grateful, positive, confident and focused. If you've never done it before, I highly recommend it!
What inspires you?
Lots of things to be honest. Thinking about my goals inspires me, being around talented people inspires me, nature inspires me, even having a conversation with a friend could inspire me. People say 'everything is art' which I agree with, and in every form of art can be a piece of inspiration, it’s just about how you choose to use it.
What are your experiences of diversity in the industry?
I think diversity is something that the industry used to struggle with a lot, but as more and more unique styles and sub-genres are becoming increasingly apparent in popular music, diversity is definitely something that is being embraced a lot more now, which makes me a very happy artist.
What advice would you give to other girls and guys looking to get into the music industry?
The best piece of advice I think I could give would be to trust in yourself and your art and to work HARD. Don't wait around for opportunities to come to you, you’ve got to go out and get them yourself.
Beauty is…
Beauty is a myth. The feminine beauty ideal is what we've been conditioned to understand and be influenced by. For me it's just about owning what you have, and the feeling that comes with that. If we're talking about beauty in terms of cosmetics, I believe makeup is to enhance your natural features, not to make new ones. When I do put make-up on, all of these feelings I have on a day to day basis, i.e confidence, happiness, courage, it just gives them a little kick up the ass and notches them up a gear!
If you could only Slapp on one beauty product, what would it be?
Oooo hard! I think it would have to be my Iconic London Liquid Illuminator, I will have this in my make-up bag for the rest of my life. A fresh dewy look is my go to!
