Why we can't get enough of Solange in 'Don't Touch My Hair'

"Don't touch my hair, when it's the feelings I wear . . . Don't touch my crown, they say the vision I've found." – Solange.

Since releasing her album ‘A Seat At The Table’ last month, we’ve been obsessing over Solange’s soulful sound and inspiring message.
-
Beyonce’s softer-spoken younger sister has proven to be as poignant as the Lemonade queen, bringing her own unique vibe to the table; and we love the accompanying music videos just as much.
-

For the video for, the standout ‘Don’t Touch My Hair’, Solange showcased an eclectic mix of hairstyles alongside stunning visuals.
-
Solange’s longtime beauty team - hairstylist Nikki Nelms and makeup artist Miguel Ramos - helped bring her vision to life, for this personal and political ode to black women and hair. Together, they created looks to embrace the symbolic nature of hair and to amplify the song’s message, which is all about self-preservation and staying true to your identity. The video features sleek finger waves, brushed-out curls, braided up-dos and Afros in all shapes and sizes, highlighting the stunning versatility of natural hair and how it can have the power to encompass and express individuality.

In one shot, Solange wears a creative crown of looped braids, which hairstylist Nikki claims was achieved using strong pipe cleaners. These were strategically braided into the hair to make the braids easier to bend, shape, and style. In another shot, Solange wears finger waves with haphazard hair clips holding them in place, adding a nonchalant essence to the look. In one of our favourite shots, Solange’s hair has a life of its own when she swishes it from side to side, to reveal a stunning head of locks covered in beads and shells. Keeping with the natural spirit of the video, the makeup looks were kept minimal, allowing Solange’s natural beauty to shine through.
